Empowering Futures: The Lasting Impact of the Refugee Employability Programme

4th September, 2025

Reading time: Two minutes

As a trusted partner in Nottingham, Futures has played a pivotal role in delivering the Refugee Employability Programme (REP), a tailored initiative designed to help refugees overcome barriers, build confidence, and take meaningful steps into employment and education. Through personalised support, language training, and strong community connections, the programme has empowered individuals to navigate new lives in the UK with dignity and direction.

Commissioned by the Home Office, REP was delivered locally by Futures, who acted as a subcontractor under Twin Training, the main contract holder responsible for overseeing programme implementation.

A Holistic Approach to Employability

REP provided a comprehensive support offer for refugees granted status within the last five years. The programme combined employability coaching, orientation to UK services, and up to 70 hours of conversational ESOL for those with limited English. Advisers met with people at least fortnightly, offering help with job searches, CVs, interview preparation, and access to training or volunteering. Where needed, support included advocacy and life skills around access to housing, health registering with a GP, and financial guidance.

Real Stories, Real Impact

The heart of REP was the trusted relationships built between advisers and people. These bonds often extended beyond the programme’s official end, with advisers continuing to support individuals through transitions into other services.

Khalil shared how his adviser helped him secure housing and a school place for his daughter, saying, “Without your help I would not have known what to do.”

Diana, overwhelmed after receiving her asylum approval and facing eviction, was supported into ESOL provision and began rebuilding her confidence. “The support I have been given has made a significant difference to my life,” she said.

Jorge, a former frontline worker in El Salvador’s public services, was guided through English classes, housing support, and eventually into work as a warehouse operative while continuing to pursue his goal of working in security. These stories are just a few among many that reflect the programme’s deep and lasting impact.

Rooted in the Community

We partnered with local refugee specialist organisations; this was key to building strong community connections. Together, we created a smooth referral pathway that gave people access to specialist advice, housing, financial support, and ESOL provision. Advisers also encouraged engagement with peer-support groups and café sessions, spaces that helped develop friendships and reduce isolation.

We delivered REP from a range of welcoming venues across Nottingham and Mansfield, including Job Centres, libraries, hotels, and faith centres, ensuring support was accessible and rooted in trusted community spaces.

ESOL Success and Skills Development

Language was a major barrier for many REP people. Our enrolment and assessment days were a testament to the energy and commitment of the REP delivery team, who worked swiftly to create meaningful opportunities for engagement. These events helped raise awareness of the programme and connected many individuals to further support.

We’re grateful to West Nottinghamshire College and our other local partners for their valued contributions to the ESOL provision in Nottingham. Their collaboration helped ensure that people could continue developing their language skills and confidence, key steps in their journey toward employment and integration. These efforts reflect the strength of our partnerships and the shared commitment across the city to empower refugee communities and build lasting impact.

Advisers also developed creative resources to support language learning during appointments, using pictorial aids and translation tools to build understanding and independence.

In Numbers

  • 192 people signed up
  • 52 of those people moved into work with verified outcomes
  • 42 people engaged with ESOL support delivered
    • 70% of those people improved their assessment scores to exceed the 70% benchmark, some jumping from 35% to 75%.
    • Entry Level 1 people improved from an average of 42% to 78%.
    • Entry Level 3 people improved from an average of 59% to 79%.

A Legacy That Lives On

Although REP has now concluded, its legacy continues. All three advisers - Ahmadou, Zakia, and Jepta have been retained by Futures and are now supporting refugees and asylum seekers through our other work. Their expertise, cultural understanding and commitment remain invaluable assets to our organisation and the communities we serve.

From welcome events to ESOL fairs, REP advisers have become trusted faces in the refugee community. Their presence has not only improved service access but also strengthened Futures’ reputation as a reliable and compassionate partner.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on the success of REP, we remain committed to building on its foundations. The programme may have ended, but the relationships, skills and confidence it developed, continues to shape brighter futures for those who need it most.
