Last year, data from the Office of National Statistics found that economic inactivity affects 28.1% of the working-age population in Mansfield – ranking far higher than the 21.2% average across Great Britain. When looking deeper into who economic activity affects and why, illness, caring responsibilities and a lack of qualifications topped the charts.

Through tailored coaching, skills development, and confidence-building, Futures aims to not only help Mansfield residents overcome their barriers to employment, but to contribute to the strengthening of Mansfield’s economic landscape

Tackling Health Barriers and Economic Inactivity

With 31.1% of unemployed residents classified as long-term sick, mental health support is essential.

Neil’s Story: After struggling with depression and anxiety, Neil joined the Transform Your Future programme. With guidance from adviser Derrick, Neil focused on mental resilience and enrolled in a mental health course. He now works in care, gradually increasing his hours and regaining a sense of purpose.

Re-Skilling for Key Local Industries

Mansfield’s largest employment sectors - retail (18.4%) and health/social care (13.8%) - offer opportunities for those with the right support.

Julie’s Journey: Redundant in her 60s and unsure of her future, Julie received help from adviser Lucy to upskill and re-enter the care sector. She now thrives in a new role, proving that age and tech barriers can be overcome with the right guidance.

Andrew’s Path: Facing confidence and health challenges, Andrew completed a Level 1 Customer Service course and gained retail experience through a charity shop placement. He’s now working towards a maths qualification to further boost his employability.

Building Confidence and Resilience

Confidence is often the biggest barrier to finding employment, especially for those out of work or facing personal hardship.

A’s Breakthrough: A single mum out of work since 2019, A received support to rebuild her confidence, resolve DBS concerns, and explore teaching assistant training. She’s now on a work trial and feeling optimistic about her future.

Wendy’s Recovery: Facing housing issues and financial abuse, Wendy was supported with emergency resources and job search help. She now works as a cleaner at a dental practice, regaining financial independence and stability.

Supporting Young People into Education and Work

Young people in Mansfield often need extra support to find their path.

A’s Progress: Struggling with anxiety in college settings, A received wrap-around support and was placed in a quiet, welcoming course at West Notts College. He’s now thriving socially and academically.

C’s Growth: With low confidence and unclear goals, C was guided into a Level 2 catering course. His attendance and confidence have improved, setting him on a promising career path.
