Real Help, Real Change: Thanks to Ask Us

At Futures, we’re all about making a difference - and the latest impact report from our Information, Advice and Support Service (IASS) shows just how powerful that difference can be.

Commissioned by Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils and the Integrated Care Board, our SENDIASS team provides free, confidential and impartial advice to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and their families via Ask Us Nottinghamshire. SENDIASS refers to the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service.

Whether it’s navigating school exclusions, accessing health services, or challenging decisions in Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), our advisers are there every step of the way.

And the numbers speak for themselves. In 2024/25, the team smashed their targets, delivering over 5,200 interventions (263% of the annual KPI), signposting over 2,200 times (557%), and achieving a 99% satisfaction rate.

This year’s first quarter got off to a flying start too, with 1,290 interventions logged and 309 signposts to further support. Now, as we approach the third quarter, it’s an ideal time to reflect on the progress made and the lives positively impacted so far.

But it’s the stories behind the stats that really show the heart of the service.

One parent shared how adviser Phoebe helped her secure an EHCP and EOTAS package for her daughter, who had been struggling with self-harm and school refusal.

“Phoebe saved my daughter’s life. She helped when no one else would and listened when no one else did.”

Another parent praised Jill for her support with both her son and daughter’s education journeys.

“Without Jill’s help, I don’t think my daughter would have ever gone back into education. She is now in college and receiving all the support she needs.”

It’s not just parents who benefit. Professionals working with SEND families also receive training and briefings to better understand the challenges and legal rights involved.

So, what’s next? The team at Futures are asking big questions: How do we reach even more communities? How do we support those whose first language isn’t English? And how do we keep our amazing staff motivated and well, while they support others through complex and emotional journeys?

Looking ahead, the future of Futures is bright and ambitious. We’re committed to evolving our services to meet changing needs, exploring innovative ways to connect with harder-to-reach groups, and continually improving support for both families and our dedicated staff. By focusing on inclusion, accessibility, and staff wellbeing, we aim to ensure that Futures is still at the forefront of positive change for SEND communities across Nottinghamshire and beyond.

One thing’s for sure: the Ask Us Nottinghamshire team is making a real impact. And we couldn’t be prouder.
