On Friday 3rd October, Futures proudly welcomed Labour MP for Nottingham South Lilian Greenwood and Councillor Linda Woodings to our newly refurbished Nottingham Centre, celebrating a major milestone in our mission to support local people into employment and education.

The visit marked the official reopening of the centre following a full refurbishment of all customer-facing areas, made possible thanks to funding from Nottingham City Council and the UKSPF Digital Capital Grant. The improvements have created a more modern, inclusive, and welcoming environment for everyone who walks through our doors.

During the visit, our guests were introduced to Fabe, a Futures customer who shared his inspiring journey of overcoming overwhelming mental health challenges in order to progress with his ambition of becoming a mental health nurse.

Emma Waldron, Fabe’s Careers Adviser, shared:

“It was fantastic to see Fabe confidently share his story and explain the support he’s received from Futures. It was a powerful moment for our guests to hear first-hand the impact our work has on individuals and their futures.”

A key part of the afternoon was a conversation with Tina Jenkins from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), one of our valued employer partners. Tina gave an overview of the vital work carried out in Sterile Services and Decontamination, explaining how Futures has helped NUH recruit 16 new staff members into these roles.

Lilian Greenwood and Councillor Woodings expressed keen interest in visiting NUH to see the learners in action and learn more about the roles they’ve stepped into

“Over the last 9 months the Futures team have been an amazing source of support in helping us fill our vacancies. With 16 new recruits, we’ve brought such diversity and strength to the team with some fabulous new team members, who would otherwise have never even considered a role in Sterile Services or Decontamination. I am beyond grateful to them for all their support.”

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with NUH to help local people access fantastic opportunities in sterile services at the QMC. The pre-employment training course offers learners a strong foundation and valuable insight into the role, with Tina providing an engaging ‘day in the life’ experience and taster sessions on-site at QMC. This is a brilliant collaboration that has already shown great success, and we’re excited to see it continue!”

As she cut the ribbon on the new Futures centre, Councillor Linda Woodings praised the transformation and the work Futures does:

“It’s really great to be here at the revamped Futures office. If you’re looking for work or feel like there’s no hope, come to Futures. These people know how to help you. I really recommend dropping in - don’t worry about appointments, just come and say hello.”

At Futures, we’re incredibly proud of the work we do and the commitment of our staff in helping to transform the lives of our customers. With this new space, we aim to provide a welcoming environment where anyone can feel confident to come in, ask for support and access digital facilities for searching for work and learning.

Friday was a day that truly showcased what Futures is all about and why our work is so vital to both the customers and the employers that we work with. Our partnership with Tina and Nottingham University Hospitals is a brilliant example of how we blend skills training with coaching and mentoring to meet real workforce needs. Meeting Fabe was a humbling and emotional moment, hearing how he has overcome adversity and now wants to give back reminded me of the immense privilege we have in helping people change their lives.
