Danielle, 37, had always struggled with maths. Despite holding a degree, her GCSE Grade E in the subject left her feeling embarrassed and held back professionally. As a visual and kinaesthetic learner, traditional teaching methods never worked for her. But with encouragement from her employer, Futures, Danielle took a bold step to upskill, enrolling in a Functional Skills Maths Level 1 course that would change her confidence and career trajectory.
Maths had long been Danielle’s “Achilles heel.” It made her feel nervous and incompetent, and the rigid teaching styles she experienced in school didn’t suit her learning style. Despite her academic achievements, this gap in her skillset was a barrier to career progression, especially as she aimed to pursue an HR apprenticeship that required a Level 2 qualification.
Danielle enrolled in the Functional Skills Maths Level 1 course through the Skills team at Futures. The course was delivered online, with access to resources tailored to her learning style, such as video content and one-to-one support. Her tutor, Mina Severn, played a key role in helping her build confidence and overcome moments of self-doubt.
I would recommend Futures for a course as the support is invaluable, as well as the individualised approach to the learning - not to mention the patience needed! There were a few moments where I lacked the confidence to carry on and nearly gave up!
With the support of Futures, Danielle not only completed her Level 1 qualification but gained the confidence to pursue a CIPD Level 3 Apprenticeship in HR. She now feels empowered to tackle Level 2 Maths and continue progressing toward her long-term career goals.
