For many people experiencing anxiety, the thought of returning to work can feel overwhelming. Long-term unemployment, health conditions, and social isolation can make it difficult to take the first step. But with the right support, re-entry into the workforce is not only possible, it’s transformative.
Kirsty’s story is a powerful example of how targeted training and compassionate guidance can rebuild confidence and open doors. She joined Futures while unemployed and struggling with anxiety and found both employment and renewed self-belief.
Kirsty, 35, from Nottingham, was unemployed and receiving Universal Credit. Her mental health had declined due to long-term unemployment, and her anxiety made it difficult to socialise or take steps toward finding work. As a stay-at-home mother of two with health conditions, Kirsty knew she needed to make a change, for herself and her children.
Kirsty took the step to enrol on a free Customer Service training course with Futures, which included a guaranteed interview with Nottingham City Council on completion.
While on the course, she benefitted from:
The flexible structure and empathetic approach of the Futures team helped Kirsty feel at ease and supported throughout her journey.
Futures gave me all the support that I needed - they made me feel at ease and helped me with my confidence. Everyone that works there are so caring and kind - they'll support you as much as they can and really want the best for you. Kevin was an incredibly patient and supportive tutor, always making sure I fully understood the course material before moving on. Their enthusiasm for teaching made every lesson engaging and thanks to their encouragement and guidance, I've improved so much and genuinely enjoyed the learning process. I don't think I would be where I am today if I hadn't gone to Futures.
Kirsty successfully completed the course and secured a job as a Cleaner at Nottingham City Council, working in schools during the evenings. Going forward, she has plans to increase her hours and continue progressing in her career. Her confidence has grown, and she’s grateful for the support that helped her take this important step.
Kirsty was the perfect example of hard work and determination. She had a clear desire to gain new skills and go forward and implement in a job role. She successfully secured that role and I couldn't be prouder.
