For college students, work experience is more than just a box to tick - it’s a vital opportunity to apply classroom learning in real-world settings, build confidence, and develop transferable skills. Whether it’s for a CV, a job interview, or simply to explore career options, hands-on experience can make all the difference.
Nathan, a 17-year-old Computer Science student, discovered just that when he took the initiative to seek out support from Futures.
As a Level 3 Computer Science student, Nathan needed relevant work experience in IT to complement his studies and strengthen his CV. Despite his motivation to find a placement, he wasn’t sure where to start.
One day, while waiting at the bus station in Mansfield, he spotted the Futures office across the road and decided to walk in and ask, “Do you know where I can go to get work experience in IT?”
The Futures team welcomed Nathan in and quickly identified a valuable opportunity for him to gain experience while supporting the local community in their own premises. Futures adviser Lucy Shaw worked with Nathan's college to arrange a placement that meant he was able to attend the weekly Jobs Club at the Mansfield office as an IT support volunteer.
There, Nathan took on a range of responsibilities that aligned with his IT skills, including:
This hands-on role not only gave Nathan practical IT experience but also helped him develop his communication and customer service skills.
It’s been a really good experience and the staff here have welcomed me in. It’s been great to get some real-world IT experience and also gain some skills in Customer Service with helping the people who come to the Jobs Club.
Nathan successfully completed his work experience and passed his Level 3 qualification. He now feels more confident about entering the IT industry and is actively looking for job opportunities. With support from Derrick at Futures, he’s updating his CV to reflect the new skills he’s gained.
Nathan came in looking for an IT based work experience placement and quickly put himself to use. He fixed our IT cabinet and became involved with helping participants with their job searches and IT questions. He also met with our IT department to learn more about their roles. Everyone has been complimentary about the work he has done and were pleased we were able to work with him. Overall, this has been a great opportunity for both Nathan and ourselves.
Nathan’s story is a great example of how a simple question can open the door to meaningful opportunities.
