How Kev pivoted his careers from law to learning support

After 30 years as a solicitor, Kev learned that it's never too late for a career change

After 30 years as a full-time solicitor for Hull City Council, Kev was ready for a change. He wanted a role with less stress and fewer hours, but had no idea where to begin.

That’s when he turned to Futures. With personalised support, Kev discovered a new passion for education and began a journey that would lead him from law to learning support.

The challenge

Kev was unsure of his next steps. He had no experience with job applications, CVs, or cover letters, and felt overwhelmed by the process. He knew he wanted something less demanding than his legal career, but didn’t know what that could be.

During a conversation about his family, Kev mentioned that both his father and sister were teachers. This sparked an idea - could teaching be his next step? Futures highlighted a Teaching Assistant course in Mansfield, and Kev enrolled immediately, using his remaining holiday days to attend.

Kev thrived in the course, learning more than he expected. His tutor, Lisa, was so impressed that she invited him to assist in her next course in Derby. He was also invited to guest speak and volunteer as a TA in an A-level law class at West Notts College.

Kev had no idea what he wanted to do, but after talking over different options he became really excited about the idea of following his family into education and teaching.

The result

Kev has now handed in his notice at his firm and is preparing to start his new journey in education.

From solicitor to teaching assistant, his transformation shows how the right support can unlock new passions and possibilities.
