S found a route back to his passion after moving to the UK

S, a 40-year-old Nottingham resident, came to Futures through the Transform Your Future programme after facing unemployment and low confidence. Having moved to the UK on a spousal visa, with no access to public funds and a young daughter to support, he was determined to find a way forward.

With the guidance of his adviser, he began a journey of personal growth, employment, and creative ambition.

The challenge

S arrived in the UK with a background in teaching and theatre acting, but without access to benefits or a clear path to employment. He struggled with confidence, isolation, and a lack of routine. His dream was to work in the arts, but he needed support to build the foundations to allow him to get there. He wanted to improve his language and employability skills and get support with finding a sense of direction.

The approach

Through the Transform Your Future programme, we helped S develop a personalised action plan that focused on:

  • Career coaching and goal setting
  • Life skills development (including communication, resilience, self-awareness)
  • CV building and job application support
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Support with a creative business idea
  • Enrolment in an ESOL course at West Notts College
I was unemployed for a while, low in confidence… I decided to go to Futures to find help. I’m much more confident now. I’m grateful to my adviser Leo and to Futures Advice for all the support. I know that when I need support, Futures will be there for me.

The result

S secured paid employment in a Halal kitchen, giving him routine and financial stability. He also began volunteering at the British Red Cross charity shop and Nottingham Playhouse, gaining valuable customer-facing experience and reconnecting with his passion for theatre. He’s also working on a children’s book originally written in Kurdish, with plans to publish it in both Kurdish and English.

His confidence has grown, and he’s building the skills and connections needed to pursue his dream career in the arts.
