Practical tools and mentoring empowered M to succeed in education and beyond

M came to Futures seeking support after years of feeling let down by the education system. Diagnosed with dyslexia in primary school, he received early intervention, but that support disappeared in secondary school.

As a result, M struggled with exams, confidence, and executive functioning skills. Through Futures, he found tailored strategies and compassionate guidance that helped him overcome barriers and succeed.

The challenge

M’s dyslexia affected more than just reading and writing, it impacted his ability to plan, prioritise, and retain information. He often forgot the beginning of a question by the time he reached the end. Without continued support through secondary school, he didn’t achieve pass grades at GCSE and felt discouraged and unsupported.

The approach

At his initial assessment, Futures identified key areas where M needed support. Together, they implemented a range of strategies, including:

  • Coloured overlays to reduce visual stress
  • Modelling techniques like story maps to reduce cognitive load
  • Memory aids including mnemonics, keyword lists, and sentence starters
  • Mind mapping and daily step lists to improve processing and retention
  • Chunking techniques to break down words and paragraphs
  • Extra time for verbal responses to support classroom participation

These strategies helped M manage his dyslexia and build confidence. He passed his Level 2 English exam and immediately enrolled in a Customer Service course at Futures, applying his new skills independently.

Jo supported me to organise my writing more concisely and keep things simple.

The result

M successfully passed his Level 2 exam and transitioned into a customer-facing role with confidence. He no longer needed one-to-one support and was able to apply the strategies he’d learned independently.
