Finding Purpose and Progress with Futures

Neil, a 43-year-old from Nottingham, found himself at a crossroads in life. Between jobs and seeking a renewed sense of purpose, Neil was eager to upskill and explore new career opportunities. His journey led him to Futures, where he discovered a supportive environment that helped him realign his goals and build a meaningful path forward.

The challenge

Neil’s journey began at a job fair, where he was actively seeking ways to broaden his horizons. He was in a transitional phase—unemployed, uncertain, and looking for direction. While he had valuable experience, he felt the need to strengthen his skill set and stay mentally engaged.

The emotional weight of this period was compounded by a personal loss during his studies, making the need for structure and support even more critical.

The approach

We worked with Neil to create a tailored support system that addressed both his professional and personal needs. He received:

  • 1:1 Careers Advice - including up-to-date CV writing support, which helped him navigate modern recruitment expectations
  • Sector Exploration - guidance on how his existing skills could transfer across industries, expanding his career possibilities
  • Training and Qualifications - enrolment in a Level 2 NVQ in Adult Social Care, which aligned with his interests and existing knowledge.

Throughout his time with Futures, Neil was supported by Amanda Turnock and other team members who offered consistent, empathetic guidance. Regular check-ins and a compassionate approach helped him stay focused, even during emotionally challenging times.

Having the support from Futures played a significant role in my development and progress as I explored new career opportunities. Knowing there was someone to guide and support me, particularly in identifying qualifications that could enhance my skill set, was incredibly reassuring and motivating.

The result

Neil successfully completed his qualification and is now working as a tutor supporting an adult resident in a care setting. The course content directly enhanced his understanding of the standards and practices he now observes daily. His ability to integrate into the workplace with confidence and clarity is a testament to the relevance and impact of the training he received.

Although his current role is temporary, Neil feels empowered and optimistic about the future. He plans to continue building on his experience, either within adult care or in a related educational role.

There are many positive aspects to working with Futures, but what stood out most for me was the empathy and genuine care shown by the staff. The regular check-ins and care shown by the team made me feel supported and valued.
